If you’re looking for an?easy way to make a DIY doggie pallet bed, this is the tutorial for you! I wanted to do a no-fuss, easy tutorial that anyone can follow without power tools. This easy DIY outdoor dog pallet bed is the perfect way to spoil your pup rotten.
One of the hardest transitions for us after we had Greyson was loving on our pup, Azi, enough. Even the other day someone told me “You know we see a lot of photos of Greyson, but not so many of Azi anymore.” And they were totally right. We noticed a big change in Azi when we first brought Greyson home and we could tell we needed to be more intentional about spending time loving on her, walking her and giving her attention in general, to make sure she still knew she was our first baby 😉
Around the holidays, I get especially sentimental and love to spoil Azi as if she were a human member of our family. While we do like to give her treats throughout the year, it’s always fun to do something a little above and beyond for the holidays.
One of the things I’ve noticed this past year is that Azi?loves laying on our porch and in the yard. While it’s great that she loves to be outdoors, she tends to lay in the dirt or porch and sometimes gets itchy from the allergens we have here. I’ve been?wanting to make a pallet bed for her for forever but kept getting overwhelmed with the tutorials I saw online. Even as I was working on this pallet bed, I found myself over complicating the project. I finally sat down and tried to figure out the?simplest way to make Azi a fun outdoor doggie bed that required no power tools!
The pallet itself as a base is a great way to start on a doggie bed. One thing you’ll notice is that one side has the wooden slabs closer together than the other side. You’ll want to make sure that the “top” side is the side with more wood pieces that are closer together.
If you have an old dog bed lying around, this is the perfect use for it. All I did for this project is buy some outdoor fabric, which can be found at your local craft store, and secured it around an old dog bed we had lying around outside already. Because the fabric for outdoor use it won’t wear as much as the current cover that was on the foam bed. For now, I just cut the fabric to fit around the bed and synched it together with safety pins (I told you, I was going for easy, peasy!) but in the future I’ll probably follow this tutorial to make a zip cover that can be removed easily to wash!
To create your own outdoor pallet bed you’ll need:
+ A Pallet
+ An old doggie bed
+ 1-2 yards of outdoor fabric depending on the size of the bed
+ Safety Pins or a sewing machine to synch the bed cover
+ Scrap wood for dog bone name plate
+ Vinyl & Die Cutting Machine or a stencil
+ Outdoor Paint
The first step is to hose down your pallet. Some pallets are cleaner than others! You can also paint the entire pallet if you want to, but I preferred the natural wood look for ours.
Second, measure your fabric around the old dog bed and trim any big excess pieces. Then use a safety pin to synch the fabric at the corners of each bed and pin it together.
For the name plate, I got super lucky that we had a piece of scrap wood lying around that somehow was exactly the size of the hole in the pallet. If you aren’t as fortunate, measure the space where you want the sign to go (each pallet is a little different, so you may have to do something slightly different than I did) and go to the hard ware store to have a piece of wood cut to that size.
Create your stencil using vinyl and a die cutting machine or with a store bought stencil. If you’re using vinyl, make sure you peel the bone part off leaving the around around the bone and the letters inside.
Apply your vinyl or stencil and carefully paint over the area on the wood.
Let dry for at least 30 minutes before peeling off stencil.
Place inside pallet.
Place doggie bed on top of pallet!
Of course a doggie bed isn’t complete without some treats! We loved giving Azi little treats every once in a while like?Purina Beneful wet dog food. It’s a special little treat that we can feel good about because of the whole ingredients in it! The best part is I can pick up these treats while I’m grocery shopping.
